A cinematic board game for 1 to 4 players
Planet of the Apes – The Miniatures Board Game is an immersive game that brings the thrilling world of the ‘Planet of the Apes’ trilogy to life. This game combines strategic planning, tactical decisions, and cooperative gameplay, allowing players to relive key moments from the iconic film series. Set between the events of ‘Dawn of the Planet of the Apes’ and ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’, the game offers a dynamic and engaging experience for fans and newcomers alike.
Summary of a Turn and Game Setup
Each game begins with players choosing a scenario, which determines the board setup and objectives. There are different boards representing different environments: Forest, Ape Outpost, Swamp, etc. Players follow the scenario instructions, placing elements such as trees and collecting the necessary components such as dice, tokens and cards (characters, orders, equipment). Apes and humans are represented by miniatures, with players controlling a group of apes (leader, bolas thrower, archer, gorilla, and others), while the game system manages human squads. Some apes are on the human side, such as the « donkeys, » renegade apes who help the humans.
Gameplay Mechanics: Movement, Combat, and Interaction
The game is played in turns, starting with the apes. Each player gives orders to their apes, choosing from three types: movement, combat, and interaction. Movement orders allow apes to move around the board, using their superior agility to climb trees and escape from human sight. Combat orders allow apes to engage humans in combat, either from a distance or in melee. Apes have a camouflage advantage, attacking unseen until they strike. Interaction orders allow for scenario-specific actions, such as lighting a pyre or summoning heroes like Caesar. Human squad actions are automated and follow predefined rules in a specific order dictated by cards.
Scenario Objectives and Strategic Play
Scenarios come with varied objectives, such as repelling human forces, escaping an area, or eliminating key targets. Each scenario grants the apes a limited number of order cards, representing the rounds available to achieve their goals. Players must strategize and cooperate to complete their objectives within these constraints. The game alternates between ape and human activations, with human actions dictated by the Squad Order cards. This turn-based system requires players to anticipate human moves and adapt their strategies accordingly, providing a rich and challenging gameplay experience.
