It Was Originally a Novel

In 1963, French author Pierre Boulle wrote « Planet of the Apes, » a visionary novel that laid the groundwork for an iconic film franchise. In this fascinating tale, astronauts discover a planet where apes have evolved to become the dominant species and enslave humans. Pierre Boulle, also known for The Bridge on the River Kwai, was not a science fiction writer, but his works had a profound impact on the genre. This novel is both a social satire and a reflection on human nature.

The Classic Movies

Between 1968 and 1973, the Planet of the Apes saga enjoyed a series of five classic films. The first film, directed by Franklin J. Schaffner and starring Charlton Heston, was a monumental success. The series explored profound themes of war, peace, and prejudice. The revolutionary ape makeup won a special Oscar in 1969, an extraordinary honor since there was no category for makeup at the time. The films left an indelible mark on popular culture.

Modern Movies

In 2011, the franchise was revitalized with Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which marked the beginning of the Caesar trilogy. With Andy Serkis in the role of Caesar, this trilogy offered unprecedented emotional depth and technological sophistication thanks to performance capture. Acclaimed not only for its special effects but also for its poignant story of ape evolution and rebellion, the trilogy redefined audiences’ expectations of science fiction. This year, a new movie set 3 centuries later brilliantly kicked off a new trilogy.

A Board Game

Today, this incredible saga is adapted for the first time into a cooperative miniatures board game. Publisher Z or Alive offers an adaptation based on Caesar’s trilogy in which you play as apes attacked in their forest by belligerent, heavily armed humans. The game relies on tactics and verticality: your apes move around the board, including the 3D trees they can climb, unlike the humans. The game will soon be available on the Gamefound crowdfunding platform.
